The Internet is being flooded with websites hosting images of child abuse. The UK’s Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) marked its 10th anniversary by releasing statistics for the last decade, reporting that more than 30,000 websites containing illegal child abuse content were removed from the Internet in that time.

The IWF has received an average of 1,000 reports per year of illegal web content since it was set up in 1996. The group received nearly 30,000 reports in 2006 to date, compared to 615 reports in 1996.

The organization revealed that 79% of the “child victims featured in the images were female.” They also reported that the “severity of the images over the last 12 months had significantly increased.”

Over the past 10 years, 51% of the content was believed to have originated from the U.S., with 20% of it coming from Russia.
